After
receiving an email from Steve Baldwin recently, he
got me thinking. God says that "My people
perish for lack of knowledge." So I have some
carefully considered thoughts for all of us in the
Christian-based moral conservative
fight:
If
it were not for the next two verses, we could
easily lose hope: Jeremiah 18:8
says "If
that nation I warned
repents of its evil, then I will
relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had
planned."
and 2nd Chronicles
7:14
states that "If my people, who
are called by my name, will humble themselves and
pray and seek my face and turn from
their wicked ways, then will I hear
from heaven and will forgive their
sin and will heal their
land."
We
have those two verses as a firm and de facto
encouragement from God. We know persecution is
coming in some form or another, but I personally
believe that God has not set a date for it in
stone; other wise He'd have to white-out those
last two verses.
Given
all that, we need to get the word out more
effectively to Christians. I'm a relatively new
activist and I had not thought of this before, but
one of the underused tools we have is evangelism,
and I am not an evangelist. Evangelism is
not something I enjoy; I am more prophetic,
as some of you are. I love the fight and I love
getting the word out. I call things as they are.
I'd just like to win a little more often than we
have been! We need more new
Christians who will have the desire and motivation
to call evil for what it is: evil. They will act
and speak out and throw political correctness to
the winds where it belongs.
So
why evangelism? Because most
new Christians are on fire for righteousness while
many 'mature' Christians are not. We need to do
and say little to get new Christians to vote
correctly and to contact their legislators. They
instinctively know what they must do and they have
the chutzpah to do it. As far as the older
Christians, we must find a way to get them to see
the mortal dangers ahead. Because they just do
not, as a group, see the grievous
and impending threat ahead of them. They are
largely blind to the approaching dangers that are
coming. Much of their inaction is due to their
misinformed sense of kindness and tolerance, but
that is not God's attitude. Remember the
money-changers?
The
Romney letter was a nice opening volley in what
appears to be a new season of warfare. It was like
a shotgun, in that it hit more than we intended.
I
began thinking this way when I recently called one
of the original Ft. Lauderdale Five (they
basically started the charismatic movement in the
1970's). I have spoken to this man many times and
I was surprised that a man of such character and
true love for God's people would not sign the
Romney letter. I am not questioning the man's
sincerity, but it did get me thinking. If the
people under such men would awaken, our cause
would be advanced overnight.
I
just finished reading two excellent books,
1776 by David McCullough and another by Dr.
Bruce Chadwick entitled George Washington's
War. They are excellent works for those of in
the fight, so to speak. Many people are not aware
of how close we came to losing the Revolutionary
War! Time and time again,
Washington lost battles and was forced to run. His
men deserted him many times. He almost had to
recruit a whole new army for each campaign.
Supplies were usually low. The press of the day
vilified him until almost the end. It was not
until Trenton that enough Americans realized that
they HAD to fight. The final inspiration
Washington spoke to his troops went like this:
"My brave fellows, you have done all I asked
you to do, and more than could be reasonably
expected, but your country is at stake; your
wives, your houses and all that you hold dear. You
have worn yourselves out with fatigues and
hardships, but we know not how to spare you. If
you consent to stay one month longer, you will
render that service to the cause of liberty, and
to your country, which you can probably never do
under any other circumstances."
In
my opinion, we are at a similar crossroads today.
In Washington's letters to Congress it is
remarkable how often he urged for "unremitting
courage and perseverance."
We are in need of such resolve
today. But are there enough of you?
English
poet Edward Young
wrote "Affliction is the good man's shining
time". I fear we are in a
similar time as before Trenton, and things will
likely have to get a lot worse before Americans
wake up. The danger is that we might never recover
from that fall. Another quote from Washington's
letter says that "A people not used to
restraint must be led, they will not be
drove." We need new heroes.
A
friend sent me a version of "America the
Beautiful" which says "America, God shed
His grace on thee". Surely
God does nothing without great deliberation and
purpose. God does not make mistakes. God does
nothing for which He must apologize for
later. Will you rise to the
occasion?
As
David McCullough ended his book 1776 by
saying: "How often circumstance, storms,
contrary winds, the oddities or strengths of
individual character, had made the difference --
the outcome seemed little short of a
miracle.
We
need to seek Almighty God for such a miracle. But
that does not exclude us from acting; far from it!
God
frequently works through human agents.
Possibly
you are one of
them?
